The City of Vaughan goes beyond fully wheelchair accessible public buses and GO Train service. It has led the way with accessible taxi service, becoming York Region’s first municipality to offer wheelchair accessible cabs through Astro Taxi Brokerage. Riders with disabilities can now make spontaneous transportation plans, just like anyone else who takes taxis, while paying the regular meter rate. And the new barrier-free subway extension will allow for easy connections within the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre as well as for seamless travel to downtown Toronto. Commuters will be able to reach Union Station in just 45 minutes.
When it comes to Vaughan’s public spaces, the City is breaking barriers with state-of-the-art accessibility upgrades. The Innovative Path System pilot project, installed in 2015 at Vaughan City Hall, allows visitors with vision challenges to navigate the building using an electronic cane, Bluetooth technology and audio feedback. Vaughan is the first city in Canada to showcase this technology. As well, the future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will provide improved access to healthcare services for the growing community.
