TTUHSC El Paso Builds an Inclusive Digital Presence

Texas Tech University and People with Disabilities

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) is a university dedicated to removing barriers — and by implementing a comprehensive accessibility solution, it’s doing just that.

As part of an integrated approach, the institution recently committed to ensuring that people with disabilities have full access to all of its digital platforms. The action plan includes a full assessment of its website against the universal accessibility standards outlined in the Web Accessibility Initiative’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. There are stringent criteria within the guidelines to ensure that videos, images, and documents are accessible to and understandable by people with hearing or visual disabilities, among others.

TTUHSC El Paso has partnered with eSSENTIAL Accessibility, to provide students, faculty and web visitors an assistive technology app, free of charge, so they can independently seek out information on the university’s website.

When website visitors click on the accessibility icon, they are directed to TTUHSC El Paso’s disability channel, where they can download the assistive technology and learn more about TTUHSC El Paso’s accessibility initiatives.

People with physical disabilities, including arthritis, paralysis, and multiple sclerosis, can now benefit from features like a hands-free mouse and other mouse alternatives, visual “click assist,” voice-activated navigation, text-to-speech, and text and image zooming.

One of the main reasons TTHUSC El Paso made the commitment to accessibility is its role in the El Paso community. As a leader in graduate and continuing medical education, the university provides community education throughout the U.S.-Mexico border region. This includes health fairs, campus visits, and free community clinics.

The university also provides robust distance education in the health professions to students who — for whatever reason — are not able to attend traditional, in-person classes. With this strong community presence and digital reach, it was important to TTHUSC El Paso that its resources be made equally accessible to all members of the community.
